SOUND THERAPY

Sound is a sensation that is caused by an object that vibrates. The speed of the vibration is called its frequency and is measured in Hertz or cycles per second. Human beings hear sounds within a very narrow, limited range of frequencies (about 20 – 20,000 Hz). Other species have much more acute hearing e.g. dolphins hear sounds up to around 200,000 Hz. So, there are many vibrations going on in the universe which, because of our human physiology, we just don’t hear, but that doesn’t mean to say that they don’t affect us.

From the earliest times, and in many cultures, sound has been considered  to be sacred. In other words, there is a link between sound and the divine; between sound and creation. This is because sound (cosmic vibration) was intuited by sages and mystics to be the basis of all matter and energy of the universe. This link is acknowledged in many religions and creation myths. Some myths speak of the universe being sung into being, and in the Vedic philosophy – ancient teachings of India – the universe is believed to arise from God sounding the sacred word Aum (Om). Although such creation myths are very old, we’re actually living at a time in which there may be a meeting of minds between spiritually derived explanations of the way in which the universe works and scientific explanations. Subnuclear physicists in their endeavour to find a ‘theory of everything’ have been exploring ‘super string theory’ and what they are saying is that there are no fundamental building blocks of matter such as small particles in atoms, but that the universe is determined by vibrational frequencies in the heart of every single atom, every single particle.

In other words, we live in and are part of a universe that, at a fundamental level, vibrates at many different frequencies. It is in understanding that everything in the universe has a vibrational frequency that we can understand how sounds we can hear may be used to benefit us, physically, mentally, emotionally, and many say spiritually, too. It is believed that when we are in good health every part of us is vibrating correctly, but that ill health causes our body to vibrate incorrectly. The therapeutic benefits of sound have been known and used for thousands of years. Sound practitioners use the sound frequencies of their tools (Tibetan singing bowls, voice, crystal singing bowls and grounding tools) to:

·        enhance frequencies within the body

·        correct frequencies within the body

·         promote the free flow of energy

·         clear and balance the human energy system.

THE ENERGY SYSTEM

Most people nowadays are aware that the human being doesn’t end at the skin, but that there is an electro-magnetic energy field which surrounds & interpenetrates the physical body, and this is called the aura. It can be seen by sensitives and with practice anyone can feel it. Located within the aura are energy centres called chakras. The chakras work as little pump houses to transfer energy throughout the body through channels called nadis.  A healthy aura and chakra system leads to a healthy body. There are thousands of chakras in the body, but seven major ones - which are located along the spine. Sound Therapy works with these seven major chakras and the aura.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A TREATMENT?

1) The therapist will look at what is happening in your energy system, using a Balinese temple bell and listening for changes in the sound of the bell. She will tell you which areas of the body and which chakras she will be working on.

2) She will use appropriate Himalayan Singing bowls to begin to affect the energy system .

3) Then she will use the voice for toning and harmonic overtoning. Toning is the singing of a single note, in this case a vowel sound. The vowel sounds directly resonate the chakras and stimulate them. Research has shown that toning has a neuro-chemical effect on the brain, increasing the effectiveness of the immune system. Harmonic overtoning uses the chest, mouth, throat and nasal cavities to sing more than one note at a time. This continues the process of stimulating, strengthening and regulating the energy system.

4) Next, the crystal singing bowls are used. These have a wonderful, pure, clear, sustained tone and are energetically very powerful.

5) During a treatment you will be asked to relax and be as open to the sounds as possible. This means that you may go as deep as you can go without actually falling asleep. What has happened is that the brain wave frequencies have altered. The optimum healing frequency is around 8 Hz. At the end of the session you will need to come back to everyday reality. This is done with the use of grounding tools—percussion instruments that are shaken or rattled.

6) Lastly, the therapist looks again at the energy system and will tell you what has shifted. She may give you appropriate ‘homework’ so that you can continue to clear and balance the energy system for yourself.

The client only needs to remove footwear and lie on a comfortable couch for the treatment.

MANTRA THERAPY

Mantras are repetitive words or phrases. They are sounds or syllables with great spiritual significance and carry and intrinsic power. It is the ‘spiritual power or energy’ contained within them that makes them different from ordinary words or phrases.

In Sound Therapy, mantras are used to re-pattern or re-programme undesirable energy patterns that have become fixed. This happens through a process called entrainment. The mantra directly affects the vibrations of the energy system. Through repetition , over time, the mantra overides (entrains) all the smaller vibrations. Ultimately, the mantra produces a state in which the organism vibrates completely in tune with the spiritual state or energy contained within the mantra.

Mantra therapy is used particularly for emotional healing. Many people suffer from what may be termed ‘inner conditions’- conditions such as fear, anger, jealousy, grief etc. Mantra is able to re-pattern this undesirable energy.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A TREATMENT?

After a short consultation in which your needs are discussed, you will be taught how to breathe correctly and shown how to warm up the voice. After this you will be taught the appropriate mantras. Mantra practice is a discipline and you should be prepared to practise morning and evening to get the desired results. The more you practise the quicker you will see a positive outcome. You will decide, with your therapist, how long you are prepared to focus on this discipline, (normally in periods of 40 days). Generally, after this period of time you will be able to see noticeable results.

SOUND HEALING

There is a complex interdependence between your body, mind, and spirit  which continually interact with each other, to produce your overall state of health. If there is a problem in any of these dimensions - physical, mental, emotional or spiritual - this information is fed back, via the chakras, and affects the others. In Sound Therapy, as in all therapies, the aim is to intervene and break the cycle, thereby allowing you to re-establish a more balanced pattern. We believe that in any illness it is important to get to the root cause of a problem and change this, not just deal with symptoms. In Sound Therapy, therefore, you would be encouraged to look for meaning in your illness and helped to look for underlying causes.

Sound Therapy is wonderful as a preventative therapy - a healthy chakra system leads to a healthy mind and body.
