THE NATIONAL COLLEGE OF COLON HYDROTHERAPY The National College of Holistic Medicine (NCHM) was started in 1985 to teach Colon Hydrotherapy. In 2005, NCHM joined with the European School of Colon Hydrotherapy and together they formed the present organisation - The National College of Colon Hydrotherapy (NCCH). In 1985, when NCHM was started, Colon Hydrotherapy was almost extinct in Britain. The therapy is very popular in the United States of America and Europe. It is a clinically proven, successful, therapeutic practice for varying bowel problems. There is very little scientific literature available pro or con and more research is seriously needed, but with the expenditure of millions of pounds yearly on laxatives, with cancer of the bowel second only to breast cancer in women and lung cancer in men, an awareness has developed that our knowledge of the large bowel is inadequate.
THE ASSOCIATION The Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists (formerly the Colonic International Association) was started in 1987 by Dr M D Siewert to regulate the practice and ethics of the practitioners. This has now grown and became a self-governing body in 1990. It has set some of the standards for the practice of Colon Hydrotherapy and accepts students from various Colleges that have been approved by the Association. NCCH, therefore, follows the standard set by the Association of Colon Hydrotherapists (ARCH)
THE COURSE REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the following criteria: 1) Be trained and qualified in a substantial body-based therapy with an in-depth knowledge of A&P which included particular emphasis on physiology covering the digestive system, metabolism, the endocrine system, nervous system and circulation. 2) Have taken a two year full-time or a three year part-time course covering A&P as detailed above and carry certification to this effect. Those with conventional medical training are also accepted for training (MD RGN) Colon Hydrotherapy is an adjunctive therapy and should be used with dietary, nutritional therapies and/or other therapies.
THE COURSE The course is taught in two sections of 50 hours each. Dr Milo Siewert covers the first 50 hours of training (Parts 1-6) and Mr Roger Groos covers the second 50 hours (Parts 7-15). At present, the first 50 hours NCCH training runs from a Thursday to a Monday. During the 5 day intensive course there is a combination of lectures and practical experience throughout the day which involves working on each other. In effect each therapist receives one or two colonics as well as giving them. It is essential that a therapist knows how it feels to receive a colonic lavage. There is a written exam on the last day (Monday). There are also supervised practical studies on up to 10 patients which take place on the course, when case histories are written up and submitted
